A Recent study in Australia discovered new facts in determining the life expectancy of mesothelioma patients, including the possibility of extending the life of the patient. As known, malignant mesothelioma is one of the rare type of cancer. Malignant mesothelioma associated with asbestos. Those who lived in an environment of asbestos in the long term, is likely to suffer mesothelima. In general, people can only survive for 7-13 months after they diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Research conducted in sydney Australia successfully find the factors that affect the survival rate of mesothelioma patients.
- Cigarettes and Alcohol, smokers mesothelioma patients and alcohol drinkers have lower survival rate than non-smokers and non alcohol drinkers (four months compared to 11 months)
- Age and Gender , those who are younger have a lower survival rate than older age (four months compared to 15 months). Men have a lower survival rate than women (8 months compared to 24 months)
- Mesothelioma Cancer Types, nonepithelioid Mesothelioma sufferers have lower survival rate compared with patients with epithelioid mesothelioma.
In addition, there are several other factors that determine the success of healing of malignant mesothelioma. Removing as much of the tumor as possible with surgery (cytoreduction) can extend patients’ survival. Removing more of the tumor during surgery led to a 15-month disease-free survival rate, compared to only seven months in patients whose tumor was more difficult to remove. The authors say this finding highlights the importance of achieving a complete tumor removal.

Asbestosis is a dangerous disease. Its name comes from its main causes, namely asbestos. Asbestos fibers that inhaled during breathing will cause lung tissue injury. Symptoms of asbestosis usually only known few years later. It occurs when the wound in the lungs tissue is big enough to detect using x-ray. Asbestosis can cause disability and death.
Asbestos, besides causing asbestosis can also the cause of mesothelioma cancer, or malignant mesothelioma. But because the symptoms are general, mesothelioma identified in decades.
At this time, the use of asbestos as a building material has been limited. Some countries even prohibit the use of this asbestos. Generally asbestos used as insulation and roofing materials. Several ways have been developed to detect early cancer malignant mesothelioma, include:
Imaging tests, used to look inside the body. This test is conducted to determine the likelihood of cancer cells in a certain place and see how far the spread of cancer cells. This test is generally applicable to all types of cancer. In addition, this test is also used to determine whether a cancer treatment showed progress or not and whether the drugs given work well.
X-ray chest, is used to show when there is thickening of the lining of the lungs or other signs of exposure to asbestos leads to malignant mesothelioma.
CT scan is similar to ray-x. The difference is in the detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT scans provide more complete picture and the detail of the body. CT scanner takes many pictures around your body and then, with the computer program, images were combined into an intact body image.
A PET scan glucose-containing substances radioaktif. When cancer cells in the body absorb a large amount of radioactive sugar then a special camera will find radioactivity. Thus, the location of the cancer cells can be determined. This test is helpful in determining the spread of cancer cells
MRI scans use radio waves and a powerful magnet to take pictures. Then the resulting picture will be processed by a computer that will produce a detailed picture of the inside of the body.
Blood Tests, this blood test is not intended to determine whether or not a person suffering from mesothelioma. But the blood test is intended to follow the progress of treatment and care.
Test fluids and tissue samples (biospi)
This is a test that must be done. Once there is a strong indication of the presence of malignant mesothelioma, fluid or tissue sample can be taken from the chest, abdomen, or heart area with a needle. Fluids or tissues then sent to a laboratory to see the presence of cancer cells. This is known as a biopsy.
Tests on laboratory samples
After the biopsy, the sample is sent to a pathology laboratory. With the help microscope, the doctor could see whether there are any cancer cells in the sample and determine the type of cancer

Early symptoms of Malignant Mesothelioma are very common and sometimes is not felt at all. In most cases, malignant mesothelioma found when someone went to the doctor because of illness. Malignant mesothelioma caused by contact with asbestos. Therefore, the best way to prevent this disease is to avoid contact with asbestos. Avoid the use of asbestos in your home. As building materials, asbestos has many advantages, such as a strong but lightweight and cheap price. But beside the advantages, terrible danger threatens you and your family, that is malignant mesothelioma. So, do consider if you choose asbestos as building materials of your home. But better, leave it and change other materials.
For those who work in asbestos environments, such as construction workers, miners, factory workers, insulation workers, railway workers, shipbuilders, makers of gas masks, and construction workers, so equip yourself with special security clothing. Malignant Mesothelioma is one type of cancer that attack the mesothelium. What is mesothelium? mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the organs. Mesothelium produces lubricating fluid that helps the movement of organs (such as contraction of the lungs contract and the heart beats).
There are several types of mesothelium, depending on the location in the body. For example:
- Peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most organs in the abdominal cavity.
- Pleura is the mesothelial tissue that surrounds the lungs and lines the chest wall.
- Pericardium is the mesothelial tissue that covers and protects the heart.
- Tunica vaginalis testis is mesothelial tissue around the male internal reproductive organs .
- Serous tunica uteri covers the internal reproductive organs of women.
When tumor grows in mesothelium or cells became cancer, that is the time someone is suffering from malignant mesothelioma.
There are two types of mesothelioma, benign mesothelioma and malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma it self generally refers to malignant mesothelioma.
